ENGLISH LANGUAGE

There is nothing simple about mastering a language – even your own!

There are intricate skills involved: language has to be decoded, comprehended, assimilated, encoded and expressed.

Add to that an abundance of rules and vocabulary, as well as an extensive dose of lateral thinking, perception & deductive reasoning,

and therein lies the reason the English language challenges many students.

The tutors at Lockerbie College understand that teaching English is both an art and a skill; it is the core of accessing and

understanding all knowledge presented in school as well as in life.

Our difference is that in teaching English, we build in our students a love of expressing themselves through language.

READING & SPELLING

Reading and spelling are the basis for spoken and written language and the major component of good comprehension skills. Often

both children and adults suffer from loopholes or gaps left while acquiring basic phonological skills. Examinations for students of English

Language still require high proficiencies in spelling as well as a high competency level in reading. If a difficulty exists in decoding words,

the reader will find even greater difficulty in ready for comprehension and severe problems may manifest in the processing,

assimilation, retention and recall of information.

Reading is vital to the understanding of language and spelling is crucial to the accurate expression of it in writing. The earlier a

challenge or disability in reading and spelling can be diagnosed and remediated, the more successful the outcome.

CLASS 3 / JUNIOR 3 Comprehension plays a major role in the preparation for the 11+ exam, which really begins in the Class 3 year at primary school. Lockerbie College has a fantastic preparation program for this year level in which remedial techniques are used to help students with the visualization process which creates the strong imagery required to master comprehension.
11+ This critical primary level year is approached uniquely at Lockerbie College, where students build strong comprehension skills through a thorough foundation in critical thinking, non-verbal reasoning and verbalising techniques. Comprehension is further broken down into receptive and expressive language skill development.

As there are so many aspects to comprehension, in order to achieve a strong proficiency, students are never taught by testing; they are taught how to think about what they see as they translate comprehensions to movies in their minds. Lockerbie College has an excellent reputation of examination success with this method of preparation.
CXC Comprehension forms the basis of both English A (Language) and English B (Literature).
